Mayor Perillo Funeral and Succession Plans

As mentioned in our last newsletter, our Mayor, Vito Perillo passed away this past week. Since then, there have been a lot of questions, and hopefully, this will answer most of them:

WAKE
Viewings for the Mayor are on Thursday 2/27 from 2:00-4:00PM, and 7:00-9:00PM at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave, Red Bank, NJ 07701.

FUNERAL MASS
The funeral will be held on Friday 2/28 from 10:30 -11:30 at St. James Church, 94 Broad St, Red Bank, NJ 07701

WHO IS THE MAYOR NOW?
Our laws state that upon the Mayor's passing, the Council President immediately becomes the acting Mayor so we are not without leadership. So as of now, Risa Clay is the acting Mayor of Tinton Falls.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
The role of acting mayor is short, and the Borough Council has 30 days to appoint an Interim Mayor to take us through the rest of the year. Remember, this year was already a mayoral election year, so we were likely getting a new mayor anyway.

While the Borough Council can meet in a special session, I figure it's likely they will do the appointment at the March 18 Council meeting, since this coming Tuesday's meeting is probably a bit too soon.

AND THEN WHAT?
If the Council ends up appointing any of the five current Council members, then that creates a vacancy on Council, and they have 30 days from that point to appoint a new interim Council member.

Looks like change is in the air...

An Easy Way for You to Help the Monmouth Dems - Last Call for Relationship Mapping

One of the most important tools for any political party or campaign is good voter information. Knowing who to reach out to and how to find them can make an enormous difference.

The Monmouth Dems have been running a program called Relationship Mapping, which is really just them asking us to to improve their voter information with our own personal knowledge. Here's how it works:

-
You send mail to Tyler Colombo at tyler@monmouthdems.org asking to participate in relationship mapping
-
Tyler sends you a link to a google doc with their Tinton Falls list
-
You look though that list, and for anyone you know, you check a few boxes on the form with some additional info

It's pretty easy, but there are two catches:
-
The list is long - BUT, you don't have to do it all. Do whatever you can.
-
The deadline is pretty soon - We're getting this out to you late. It's been going on a while, and they are trying to wrap it up in the next couple of weeks.

The more info you can provide, the sharper the tools are in the Monmouth Dems toolbox.
Congress Getting Closer to Passing Brutal Budget Bill

The House just passed Trump's horrendous budget bill. The Senate recently passed a somewhat less awful bill, and now the two chambers need to negotiate on the final bill. These aren't normal times, so it's difficult to know if letting your representatives know you oppose the bill means anything, but it definitely doesn't hurt. And sometimes it feels good just letting people know what you're thinking.

An organization called 5calls.org promotes contacting your representatives and has made it easy for anyone to do.

If you want to add your voice to the huge list of people opposing these bills, go to this web site: https://5calls.org/issue/budget-safety-net-cuts-wealthy-tax-breaks/. You'll need to enter your City, State, and ZIP so it knows where you are, and then it will guide you through the process.
Give 'em hell!
The 24 Hour Economic Blackout this Friday

Have you heard about this thing yet? A group called The People's Union USA is organizing a national boycott of all purchases this Friday, Feb 28. They are technically a non-partisan group, so not really a Democratic thing, BUT it is a democracy thing. They want everyone in America to not buy any non-essential products:
-
Do not make any purchases
-
Do not shop online, or in-store
-
No Amazon, No Walmart, No Best Buy - Nowhere!
-
Do not spend money on Food & Gas
-
Do not use Credit or Debit Cards
-
Do not hire anyone to do work around your house, etc.
Click the link above or check out these news stories:

If this goes well, they have multiple other targeted boycotts planned.
See their FAQ and scroll to item #6 to see all the future boycotts.
