HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Now..

GET BUSY!

New Years Poster 5 copy.jpg

Friends. We had a nice rest following our election victories in November.  I hope you enjoyed it. But now it's January 2026, and things have changed.

Just a few days ago, I finally came out of the coma I drank myself into on New Year's Eve, and when I checked my email I realized that the election was already in full swing and we have real work to do.

Most of this work will be born by the Tinton Falls County Committee Members who will be casting votes at the Monmouth Dems Convention on Feb 7, but for the rest of you, it's never too early to get informed...  or maybe it is too early.

Now that I think about it, why is the convention so early?

I will look into this mystery and get back to you.

In the meantime, check out the individual articles below for more information about the convention, who's running, the events leading up to the convention, and how you can learn more about the candidates.

BUT before we go way down that road, some exciting local news:

Risa Clay

sworn in as Mayor of Tinton Falls

Mayor Risa Clay.jpg

Before we get into all the stressful politics, here's a quick happy story:

At the January 6, 2026 Council meeting, Risa Clay and her team were sworn in as Mayor and Council Members.  Risa was already the Mayor, but she was appointed to that role after Mayor Perillo passed away last year.  This swearing in represents her first official term as the Mayor elected by the residents of Tinton Falls, and boy was she elected.  Her and her team won by a huge margin.

Also sworn in as Council members were Kashyap Parikh, Greg Alessi, and Lawrence A. Neis.  Like Risa, Greg and Kash were appointed to their roles, and Larry was new, so all three of them were celebrating their first real election victory.  It was a great ceremony.

In stark contrast to the national political scene, I cannot recall a time in the last 28 years of living here where I felt better about our entire local government.  Our mayor and all five council members as well as the rest of the administration are all incredibly good people with their hearts in the right place, and I am feeling very positive about the future of our town.

Here is Risa being sworn in by Senator Vin Gopal

Risa-swearing-in.jpg

At the same meeting, councilman Mike Nesci was elected President of the Borough Council.

Finally, our Borough Administrator, Charles Terefenko resigned at the end of last year.  Our Chief Financial Officer, Tom Fallon, will be serving as the interim administrator while Risa and her team search for a new person to fill that role permanently.  Tom did this job in the past and was great at it. There is nothing to worry about in terms of running the town.  It's all good.

Is it convention time already?

Dem-ass.jpg

As mentioned above, the Monmouth County Democrats will be holding their election convention on Saturday, Feb 7.  At this convention, all of the official delegates will vote to decide which candidates the county party will be endorsing in the June primary.   ZZZZzzzzzzzz........

Sorry, I fell asleep while I was writing that.

Yea, the convention isn't always the most exciting thing, largely because in most elections, the candidates are running unopposed. Democrats rarely (as in never) challenge Democratic incumbents, and Monmouth County is so red that we're lucky when even one person steps up to challenge a Republican incumbent.

However... each year, there always seems to be one race where there is an honest to goodness contest between multiple candidates:

  • Two years ago was super exciting as we had to choose a Senate candidate to replace the disgraced Bob "gold bar" Menendez.  In that election, Monmouth County bucked the political machine and endorsed Andy Kim over Tammy Murphy.  It was actually a pretty big deal, and since our convention is so early, we might have set the tone for other counties as Andy Kim did eventually go on to win the primary and the Senate seat.

  • Last year, we had to choose between six candidates running for Governor, and Monmouth County overwhelmingly voted for Mikie Sherrill.  It was a great victory, and of course Mikie went on to win the primary and the election, although on the way out of the convention, I thought I noticed the faint smell of machine oil.

  • This year, the big race is for Congressional District 4, where the winner of the primary will get to take on Absentee Congressman Chris Smith for his seat in the House of Representatives.  There are four people running in that race, so our Tinton Falls Committee members need to decide who they want to vote for by Feb 7.  Yikes!  That's really soon.  See below for info about the candidates.

I should add that up until two years ago, the results of the convention played an outsized role in who won the June primary. That's because the winner of the convention got their name placed in a super good position on the June ballot, while everyone else got placed in a less obvious location.  That was called the "Party Line", and it was super un-democratic.  But two years ago, after several years of litigation, a judge looked at it and said "Hey, this is super un-democratic!" and threw out the party line.  So now, while the county party still gets to endorse a candidate, it no longer affects the position on the ballot. One small step for democracy.

Is this the year we dump Chris Smith?

Four people are running to try.

No Chris Smith.jpg

Republican Congressman Chris Smith, our congressman, first elected to Congress in 1980. Holy crap!  I didn't even have my cool new wave hairdo in 1980, and that was an entire lifetime ago.  Chris Smith is one of the most do-nothing people in Congress, and who can blame him.  He has the safest seat in the state thanks to Democratic gerrymandering.  Our own party took all the Republicans they could and stuffed them into CD4 so that folks like Frank Pallone would have a safer seat in their district. Thanks guys!  I miss Rush Holt!

So, why would anybody want to run against him?  Because he sucks, that's why, and we need to get rid of him!  And so far this year, four people have stepped up and are seeking the Democratic nomination in June to run against Smith in November.  Outstanding!

I was going to put information about those folks here, but this is all so new, and new information is coming in every day about these folks, so putting it in this static newsletter seems like a bad idea. Instead, I'm going to create a

CANDIDATE INFORMATION PAGE on this web site.  This will be a page where all the candidate info can reside and can be updated continuously as we get new information.  So go there to learn about the four people running, and let's hope this is the year we finally get to leave Chris Smith in Virginia where he spends all his time anyway.

As you learned above and from our new

CANDIDATE INFORMATION PAGE

there are four candidates running for the CD4 nomination.

If you're a county committee person, you need to choose one of these folks by Feb 7 in order to vote at the convention.  So how do we learn about them?  well, there are links and documents on the candidate info page, but if you want to see them in person, you have just ONE CHANCE (so far).

Monmouth County Getting Redistricted

Tiny District Map.jpg

When you vote, you need to know what voting district you're in.  Did you know that our little town has FIFTEEN voting districts?  Each of those districts gets a polling location, 2 voting machine and four poll workers per election.

Over the years, the number of people living in each of those districts has changed a lot, and the districts now all have widely varying numbers of voters in them.  For example, I'm a poll worker in District 6 but District 5 sets up right next to us.  District 5 has twice as many voters as District 6, so all day long, there are people waiting to vote in District 5 while we in District 6 just sit there and watch.  That's not cool.

Well, this year, the board of elections is planning on redistricting all of Monmouth County in order to level out the number of people in each district.  I think this is a good thing, but it means the district lines in Tinton Falls will probably be changing, and your election district might be changing.

The meeting where the new maps will be revealed and voted on is on January 13.  We were not allowed to see them before the meeting.  Stay tuned, and we'll get those maps out to you as soon as we have them.

Don't be alarmed by the term "redistricting".  There is no electoral college at the town level and there isn't anything else that would affect the outcome of an election based on these changes.  It's just to level out the numbers.

ICE Out For Good Rally - TOMORROW
Sun, Jan 11

Ice Out for Good.jpg

We all heard the news about the horrible ICE shooting and killing of a protester in Minneapolis.  This event has sparked nation wide protests, and we're having one of those right here in Tinton Falls (They call it Ocean, but we know better).

The Rally is TOMORROW (Sunday, Jan 11, 2026) at the Tinton Falls Plaza, corner of Asbury Ave and Green Grove Dr.  It's scheduled for 2:00PM to 2:30PM, so not a huge time committment.

There will definitely be folks from our club there.  We hope you can make it.

Club Meeting Schedule for 2026

Calendar1.jpg

Last year, we started a new meeting plan with a regular schedule, and began holding our meetings at Maurizio's so we could eat while meeting.  I think that went pretty well.  We gained a few folks, and lost a few folks, but the ones who come seem to like it, so in 2026, we'll keep exactly the same pattern.

We meet most months on the FOURTH TUESDAY of the month

All meetings start at 6:30PM and are held at

Maurizio's Restaurant and Pizzeria

613 Hope Rd, Eatontown, NJ 07724

https://www.mauriziosristorante.com/

[Google Map to Restaurant]

We order off the menu and split the check based on what you ordered.

IF YOU DON'T EAT ANYTHING, YOU DON'T OWE ANY MONEY.

Maurizio's is also a Bring you own Beer and Wine restaurant, so plan to bring your own beer or wine.  It helps make the political discussion easier.

If you can, PLEASE RSVP for each meeting

by sending email to info@tfdems.org

BRING FRIENDS!

ALSO - REMOTE ACCESS IS NOW ONLY BY REQUEST

We're not going to jump through the hoops of doing a remote meeting unless someone actually wants to attend that way, so if you want to be there but can't, please contact us in advance so we can set up the zoom.

Here is the 2026 Meeting Schedule:

NOTE: Dates marked with a ** are NOT on the fourth Tuesday.

Annual Dues
PLEEEEEEASE

Money.jpg

Personally, I think we've been pretty great about NOT asking you for money, but once a year, we have to ask our members to contribute $25.00 per person to help fund the work we do. This money is critical to help us pay for things like this web site, our booth at community day, and all of those space lasers we supposedly have.  Pretty please, if you have the means, send us your annual dues.  Here's how you can get the money to us:

Please - Send $25.00 per person

Send electronically via Zelle:

Send to:  info@tfdems.org

Or scan this QR code from inside Zelle:

Zelle-QR-Code.png

Send an old fashioned check:

Payable to:

The Democratic Club of Tinton Falls

PO Box 91

Oakhurst  NJ  07755

Or, if you must use cash, come pay at a meeting

Cash is our second least favorite option.

Not giving us any money is our least favorite option.
